Imagine mounting a 1200-pound horse as it becomes your legs-- after being confined to a wheelchair all your life. Imagine you are a stroke victim who has lost her balance, coordination and subtle muscle control-- all of which are rekindled when you learn how to ride. Imagine you are an autistic child whose warm, multi-sensory connection with your teacher and horse built by grooming, saddling and riding enables you to learn in ways you can’t experience in a classroom. Imagine you are a young woman suffering from depression, eating disorders or labeled “at risk” for whom the horse breaks barriers and lifts your life away from potential tragedy. Established in 1998, Willowind Therapeutic Riding Center has served hundreds of people in our community. Its mission: to help those challenged by physical and mental disabilities while bringing our rural heritage into the present.
