KDKC is a week long camp where children with type 1 diabetes, ages 7 – 16 can come to have fun, meet other kids with diabetes and experience camp. KDKC is held at the Camp Victory facility every year during the third week of June. Throughout the week campers work closely with counselors, clinicians and dietitians to learn more about their diabetes and diabetes management in a casual, non-clinical environment while they participate in all the activities Camp Victory has to offer. The Camp Victory facility includes 12 sleeping cabins, a spacious dining hall, a med shed, and many other amazing places for kids to have fun. Some of the activities at Keystone Diabetic Kids Camp include swimming, archery, arts and crafts, sports, exploring the Nature center, a climbing wall, zip line, fishing, biking, and many more. KDKC is staffed completely by volunteers including a camp director, medical staff, nutrition staff, cabin counselors, and program staff. All staff members are carefully screened. Background checks are performed on each staff member and references are required. Many staff members are veterans of past summer camps for children with chronic health conditions. Upon arrival, all staff members attend an intense and thorough training period to learn through practice how to provide personalized care and support for all campers. Qualified medical personnel from area medical centers staff KDKC 24 hours a day. Doctors, nurses and physician assistants volunteer their time at KDKC from all over the state, including:
